Keep, wait, toss: what to buy when you’re expecting.
Becoming a new mom is such an exciting experience! But it’s no secret that it can also be overwhelming – from baby-proofing your house, to figuring out a birthing plan and all the other preparations in between. What do you need right away? What can wait (and give your wallet a break)? And what can you skip buying all together?
After chatting with many moms, here are the top items to keep, wait for and toss from your list.

Diapers – they are expensive and they go fast. That being said, some babies don’t even fit into newborn diapers, so buy a small pack to start. Stick to buying sizes 1-4 if you’re going to buy bigger boxes. If you choose to go disposable, you can start buying them ahead of time when there are sales. |
A crib – most moms agree that babies sleep better in a bassinet for the first few months. Having them close makes it easier to feed the baby many times throughout the night, and is recommended by most health professionals to decrease the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). |
Change table – you are usually going to change your child wherever you are, not wherever the change table is. A diaper bag with a changing pad is a convenient way to protect your carpet and your baby when you’re not at home. |

A car seat that has a clip-in base and can be used as the bucket for the stroller too. Bring the car you will use it in to the store, to make sure it fits. |
Jumper – these can wait a few months, until baby can hold their head up. Find one that plugs into the wall because they can go through batteries fast. A swing is the better route to go; many newborns love them because they mimic the movement of the womb. |
Newborn clothes – they either won’t fit into them for long or won’t fit into them at all! Leave the price tags on so you can exchange if needed. |

Breast pump – investing in a good breast pump is essential. If you’re planning on having multiple children, buying one is worth the money. You can also rent a hospital grade pump. Check with your health insurance for potential coverage. Whether you buy or rent, don’t cheap out. Even if you don’t intend to store breast milk, some moms need to pump just to increase their supply. |
Bumbo chair – these are useful, but not necessary until the baby no longer needs neck support. |
Newborn diapers – see point above. Buy a small pack, but don’t invest a ton of money into something that might not fit for very long or at all. |

Items that will save your back: a good nursing pillow and a baby bath that doesn’t require you to hold the baby the entire time or with a stool underneath. |
A highchair (or any solid food related items) can wait. Babies don’t eat solid food until about five to six months. |
Diaper wipes warmer and bottle warmer. The verdict was that some moms appreciated these tools, but they are really not a necessity! So if you are looking to save some money, you can hold off on these. |
Keep in mind that some strategies and baby items that work for one child won’t always work for another. And don’t forget – you are a superhero. You are creating a tiny human.
