Delicious Homemade Baby Puree Combinations
When it's time for your baby to graduate from formula or breast milk, their purees can be anything but dull and monotonous, with these delicious flavour combinations!
Getting Started:
It is recommended to start introducing purees to baby around six months, or around the time they have good head and neck control, can sit well with minimal support, or show interest by opening there mouths when a spoon is near.
Some doctors also recommend, starting your baby with vegetables first before fruit, so they don't get too used to the sweetness of fruit first and become turned off of vegetables. Once you have introduced a variety of green and orange vegetables individually, you can begin to experiment with fun combinations and once they are used to the texture you can work in meats! Many can even be adapted for little ones over 1 for breakfasts and snacks.
Here are some yummy combos to try...
1) APPLE + SPINACH + PEA PUREE
This green puree will soon be your little ones new must have puree. Besides being sweet, smooth and scrumptious it is filled with not 1 but 2 green veggies that provide a big heaping dose of protein, calcium, vitamin A and C, fiber and iron and served with a side of yumminess.
RECIPE
2 organic Apples
1/4 cup organic Spinach, packed
1/4 cup organic frozen peas
1. Core and chop apples.
2. Place all ingredients into steamer basket, cover, and heat for 10 minutes over boiling water.
3. Let cool slightly. Transfer all ingredients into blender and puree for 30 seconds or until smooth, adding water from steamer in 1/4 cup increments if needed.
Will last 4 days in fridge or 4 months in freezer.

2) BLUEBERRY + SPINACH PUREE
High in vitamins A, C and E, calcium and flavonoids. Makes 2 1/2 cups
RECIPE
- Two 10-oz packages frozen spinach
- 1 1/2 cups blueberries (if frozen, puree)
- 1/2 tsp lemon juice
- 2 Tbs water
- Put spinach in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer 6 to 7 minutes. Drain.
- Puree spinach, blueberries, lemon juice and water in a food processor until smooth, 1 minute. If necessary, add 1 tablespoon water to make puree smoother.

3) BANANA + AVOCADO MOUSSE PUREE
Bananas and avocado are not only monsters of nutrition, but they also make a creamy and delicious combination for babies and toddlers. Avocados are rich in the antioxidants beta-carotene and vitamin C and E while bananas are filled with magnesium and potassium.
RECIPE
- 1 banana, peeled and chopped
- 1/2 avocado, peeled and cubed
- 1/4 cup whole milk yogurt
- 2 tablespoons rice milk (you can also use almond, soy, whole, or breast milk)
- Place all the ingredients in a food processor or blender and puree until thick, but smooth.
- Serve.

4) SWEET POTATO + CARROT + APPLE PUREE
Butternut squash, like pumpkin and sweet potato, are ideal for baby food recipes. It is easily digested, rarely causes allergies, and is a good source of betacarotene and vitamins C and E. Babies like the naturally sweet taste, which combines well with vegetables like peas or broccoli and also goes well with fruits like apple or pear.
Cooking fruit and vegetables in a steamer, as in this baby food recipe, is one of the best ways of preserving nutrients.
RECIPE
- 1 medium butternut squash (about 450g)
- 1 ripe juicy pear
- Peel the butternut squash, cut in half, remove the seeds and chop into pieces.
- Steam for about 12 minutes.
- Peel, core and chop the pear; add to the steamer and continue to cook for 5 minutes or until the squash is tender.
- Puree in a blender.

5) SWEET POTATO + COCONUT MILK + CORIANDER
When sweet potatoes are combined with coconut milk you are giving your baby a hearty dose of Vitamin A and E, beta carotene, potassium, calcium, folate and iron. Not to mention, that sweet potatoes are considered one of the best solid foods you can introduce to your baby. The coriander is a great way to introduce new flavours, of herbs and spices.
RECIPE
- 3 Medium organic Sweet Potatoes
- 1/2 - 1 cup canned Coconut Milk, Full Fat
- 1/2 tsp Coriander
- Heat oven to 400 degree F.
- Prick sweet potatoes several times with a fork and wrap in tin foil. Roast in oven for 45-50 minutes or until tender.
- Let cool slightly and then peel away skin adding sweet potato meat to blender.
- Add coconut milk and coriander to blender and puree on high for 1 minute or until smooth. Start by using 1/2 cup coconut milk and adding more if needed to achieve desired consistency.
- Will last 4 days in an air-tight container in fridge or 3 months in freezer.
